If you’re travelling by bus to start your walk you’ll be looking at the FirstBus timetables. The X4, from Bristol and, the X5 from Weston-super-Mare and Clevedon, both stop at Coombe Road in Portishead, at what3words ///reap.splints.meant. This is the most convenient stop to the Coast Path entrance in Kilkenny Fields.

How to Find the Start

road entrance to kilkenny fields car park and the coast path to clevedonOnce off the bus, walk up Coombe Road to the first junction, where it crosses Slade Road. Turn right along Slade Road up a slight incline to the next crossroads. Then and go straight across and walk along Battery Road. At the end, turn left along tree-lined Beach Road West and enjoy the view of the Lake Grounds, Battery Point, the lighthouse, and the Bristol Channel.

Proceed along Beach Road West until the road curves to right, around a small grassy area. Fork left into the narrow road in the photograph that leads through a gate to Kilkenny fields, at grid ref ST 46169 76897, what3words ///lure.heartless.goofy

If you’d like to come again, you can park on Kilkenny Fields in the summer, admire the view and use the picnic tables. No fires or barbecues are allowed, though.

Include a Visit to Portishead Quays Marina

For a longer walk you could get off the bus earlier when travelling from Bristol, later from Clevedon, at Portishead Marina, Harbour Road. From the bus stop, head towards Aqua Italian Restaurant. Walk down the left (west) side of the dock to the end, go up the steps by the lifeboat station. Just up the hill turn right at the back of the Royal Hotel, and follow the coast on Woodlands Road. Just as the road starts to rise again, fork right along an unsigned path through woods to Battery Point, also called Portishead Point.

There’s also a Marina Walk page on Visit Portishead.

There are several ways down to the Promenade, which is visible as you come out of the woods. There are cafés at either end. Keeping the sea on your right follow the Promenade until it joins Beach Road West. Proceed up the hill to the top and take a sharp right turn into the narrow tarmacked road to Kilkenny fields.
