Are We Damaging Our Children’s Feet for Life?

24 April 2026

Portishead retailer backs national campaign to tackle hidden health issue affecting babies and toddlers

A Portishead shop owner is helping lead a national campaign warning that poorly fitting shoes could be causing lasting damage to young children’s health.

SoleLution owner Tanya Marriott has joined forces with independent children’s footwear specialists across the UK to launch the “Fit Well, Grow Well” campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the risks associated with ill-fitting shoes during early childhood.

The campaign coincides with the launch of the Footwear Hub, a new online platform created by experienced shoe fitters who say they have witnessed first-hand the long-term consequences of poor footwear choices.

Mrs Marriott says the issue is more serious and more widespread than many parents realise.

“What we’re seeing is deeply concerning” she said. “Many parents don’t realise the damage that badly fitting or inappropriate shoes can cause, not just to feet, but to the entire body.”

According to the campaign organisers, children’s feet develop rapidly in their early years, meaning even minor fitting issues can lead to significant long-term problems, including improper foot development and structural complications later in life.

Tanya believes the problem has worsened in recent years, pointing to the rise in online shopping and a lack of trusted, accessible advice for parents.

“There are also misconceptions about how quickly children’s feet grow,” she added. “Footwear is the only item of clothing that can have long-term effects on your health and wellbeing.”

Experts involved in the campaign warn that poorly fitting shoes can contribute to a wide range of issues, from blisters and corns to more serious conditions such as joint pain, nerve problems, back ache and even migraines.

In contrast, properly fitted footwear can help prevent many of these problems and support healthy development.

Despite the stark warnings, organisers stress that the campaign is not intended to alarm parents, but to educate them.

The Footwear Hub provides guidance on how to choose well-fitting shoes, advice on children’s foot health and information on warning signs that footwear may be unsuitable.

Campaigners are urging parents, carers and healthcare professionals to take children’s footwear seriously and seek expert advice wherever possible.
