Hundreds turn out for Portishead Christmas lights switch-on
Hundreds of people filled Portishead High Street on Monday evening to watch the town’s Christmas lights burst into life.
Crowds gathered at the precinct end of the High Street, enjoying live music and upbeat commentary from radio, TV and podcast personality Ian “Downsy” Downs as they awaited the arrival of Santa and his special guests to flick the switch.
This year world champion triathlete, Judy Orme, was nominated to switch the lights on and Judy joined Downsy, Father Christmas and one of his elves on stage to flick the switch.
Remarkably, Judy didn’t begin competing in triathlons until her 50s; she went on to secure the world title in the 70–74 age category at the 2024 World Triathlon Championships in Torremolinos, Spain.
Throughout the lights switch on ceremony Portishead’s 2025 carnival royals handed out sweets and collected children’s letters for Santa, before a short but brilliant firework display brought the celebration to a close.
The town’s festive lights are made possible each year thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to plan, install and maintain the illuminations.
